Factors to Consider When Choosing Crabs

With the availability of different types of crabs, many people find it hard choosing the ones to buy and serve their family or clients. In this article, we will take you through the steps to follow in choosing crabs. Since you wont go to the beach to catch the crabs, you will have to get them from seafood shops.

Homeowners and restaurants that want to prepare crabs for their families and clients respectively need to check where the store owners have kept the crabs they want to buy. The best crabs to buy are those kept in dry places. Buying those stored in water tanks is not ideal since they tend to use up more energy and lose their reserves more quickly. Besides, crabs need to be cooked when they are fresh, as a matter of fact, they need to be cooked within two days of being caught. Therefore to ensure that you are getting the best crabs that are still fresh, it is important to ask the seller when the crabs were caught.

Another critical consideration when buying crabs involves checking the activity level of the crabs. It is a good idea to get a live crab not a dying or a dead one. You wont like the scent of a dead crab, as a result, consider buying crabs that are still alive.

Another thing to look in a crab is the claw. A full-grown crab will have bigger claws. When buying crabs, it is important to choose the gender you want. However, it is easy to differentiate the gender, for instance, male crabs have a narrow T-shaped apron like structure on the back of their shell, while female crabs have a wide apron. You can also differentiate the gender by looking at the claws, female crabs have red-tipped claws, while male claws are blue.

It is also vital to choose crabs according to their size. Crabs range from small to large sizes. There are cases where certain crab dealers group the size of crabs in numbers, for instance, there are number one, two and three. When crabs are classified in number, number one refers to the largest, heaviest males, number two are smaller males while number three is the smallest crabs.

Furthermore, when buying crabs to prepare at home, make sure that they are of the legal size. Before you buy crabs, it is important to go through the set rules and regulations that govern the size of crabs to be used as meals.

Another cortical consideration to choosing the best crabs involves understanding the taste and preference of your audience. Ensure that the crabs you want to buy will meet the needs of your audience. It is a good idea to buy crabs for your kids that will be easy for them to handle.
